When an assessment can help

People come to us for an ADHD assessment because something is not adding up. Often it is one or more of these.

You have always felt like you are working harder than the people around you to keep up, and you are not sure why.
Tasks that should be straightforward - paperwork, admin, follow-through - take an unreasonable amount of effort or do not get done at all.
Your attention drifts, time runs away from you, and you have learned to mask this with late nights, lists, or working in short intense bursts.
Someone close to you has been recently diagnosed and you are starting to recognise yourself in their experience.
You suspect ADHD and want a clear answer, either way, so you can decide what to do next.

An assessment gives you that clear answer. If the answer is yes, the report opens up treatment options, workplace adjustments, and study accommodations. If the answer is no, you have ruled it out properly and can focus on what else might be going on.

Our process

We assess to DSM-5 criteria, using a combination of structured clinical interview, validated rating scales, developmental history, and collateral information where appropriate.

01

Initial intake call (15 minutes, free)

We talk briefly about what is bringing you in, what you are hoping to get out of the assessment, and answer any questions about cost or process before you book anything.

02

Clinical interview (90 to 120 minutes)

A structured diagnostic interview with your psychologist. We cover your current functioning across work, study, relationships, and daily life, and we map your developmental history from childhood onward.

03

Rating scales and collateral information

You complete validated self-report measures between sessions. With your consent, we may also gather collateral input from a partner, parent, or close friend who has known you across different life stages.

04

Feedback session (60 minutes)

We walk you through the findings in detail, explain the diagnostic reasoning, and discuss what the results mean for you. This is a conversation, not a one-way results delivery.

05

Written report

A comprehensive diagnostic report with formal findings, formulation, and specific recommendations for work, study, treatment pathways, and any further assessments that may be useful.

End-to-end timeline is typically four to eight weeks from first appointment to final report.

A report you can actually use

A diagnostic report is only useful if you can do something with it. Ours is written to be practical.

For work

Specific workplace adjustment recommendations you can take to HR or your manager. Framed in language that aligns with Fair Work Act and Disability Discrimination Act provisions for reasonable adjustments.

For university

Recommendations that meet the documentation requirements of disability services at Sydney universities including UNSW, USyd, UTS, and Macquarie. Useful for special consideration, extended deadlines, exam adjustments, and alternative assessment arrangements.

For treatment

A clear summary of the diagnosis, severity, and presentation that your GP or psychiatrist can use as the basis for a referral to medication management if you choose that pathway.

For you

A formulation that makes sense of your experience, in plain language. Not just a tick-box diagnosis.

Getting started

Three steps. Most clients book their clinical interview one to two weeks after the intake call.

Step 01

Start an assessment referral

The form takes two minutes. We talk briefly about what you are looking for, answer questions about process and cost, and check that an assessment is the right fit.

Step 02

Schedule your assessment

If we are a good match, we book the clinical interview at a time that suits you. Most clients book one to two weeks out from their initial call.

Step 03

Complete the process

Interview, rating scales, feedback session, written report. Four to eight weeks end to end. You stay informed at every step.

Telehealth option: most of the assessment process can be completed via telehealth if you prefer, or you live elsewhere in Australia. The clinical interview and feedback session work well by secure video. Rating scales are completed online regardless of format.

Common questions

Do I need a GP referral?
No. You can book directly without a referral.
Will I get a diagnosis at the end?
You will get a clear diagnostic conclusion, whatever it is. That might be ADHD, with the specific presentation (inattentive, hyperactive-impulsive, or combined), it might be no ADHD diagnosis, or it might be a different diagnosis that better fits what is going on. We do not give a diagnosis to clients who do not meet the criteria.
Can I get medication through Ivy Psychology?
Psychologists do not prescribe medication. If you would like to explore medication, the assessment report gives your GP or psychiatrist the documentation they need to discuss that with you.
How long does the whole process take?
Four to eight weeks from your first appointment to receiving the final written report. We can sometimes work faster if there is a deadline (for example, a university accommodation deadline).
Is the report accepted by universities and workplaces?
Yes. Our reports meet the documentation standards used by Australian universities and the recommendations are written to be actionable in Australian workplaces.
Do you offer assessments for children or adolescents?
Yes. Child and adolescent assessments are priced higher than adult equivalents because they include cognitive testing. See the full fee table above, or get in touch and we will explain what is involved.
What if I have already been assessed before?
If you have a previous assessment you want updated or reviewed, get in touch. We can sometimes do a shorter re-assessment depending on what is available from the previous one.
